A. Finasteride:
There are a number of brand names for the drug used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (5-ARI). It is indicated for the treatment of men with an enlarged prostate and for the treatment of men with an enlarged prostatic volume (for BPH treatment, it is used to treat a condition known as androgenic alopecia). Finasteride 5-ARI is not indicated in the management of the prostate cancer. A maximum daily dose of 5 mg is recommended for the treatment of BPH. It should be used at the lowest dose of 5 mg to treat patients with an enlarged prostate and for the treatment of men with an enlarged prostate. Finasteride (5-ARI) is not indicated in the management of BPH. BPH is usually diagnosed after the prostate has been removed. Finasteride 5-ARI is not indicated in the management of BPH. C. Minoxidil: Minoxidil is used to treat men with a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). It is a vasodilator (an inhibitor of the body's response to the vasodilator prostaglandin E2) which acts to relax the prostate and improve urinary symptoms (e.g. pain, irritation, enlargement). It is also used to treat men with BPH who have a enlarged prostate and are unable to use an effective diuretic. A maximum daily dose of 1 mg is recommended for the treatment of BPH. Minoxidil may be used alone or in combination with another vasodilator, such as an alpha-blocker (such as alfuzosin, tamsulosin) or an alpha-adrenergic blocker (such as doxazosin, alfuzosin, prazosin). The maximum daily dose of 5 mg is recommended for the treatment of BPH. Dose adjustments should be considered in the management of BPH when the benefits of both the alpha-blocker and the alpha-adrenergic blocker are insufficient. The alpha-blocker is not indicated in the management of BPH. F. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs): Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as esomeprazole (Nexium) are indicated for the treatment of the symptoms of BPH. The maximum daily dose is 3 mg taken once daily with meals. PPIs are used alone or in combination with other drugs. PPIs are used alone or in combination with another drug such as a calcium channel blocker such as verapamil or atropine. The maximum daily dose is 5 mg taken once daily with meals. PPI therapy should be started as early as possible and the dose may be increased up to 5 mg as needed, with at least 3 consecutive daily doses of the same PPI. In patients with a history of drug abuse or dependence, the use of PPI therapy should be continued for at least 5 days after the last dose prescribed and should be tapered if necessary. The use of PPI therapy in patients with a history of drug abuse or dependence is not recommended.
